Casa Ambrosia sits in total peace and privacy on 4 acres, surrounded by tall cottonwood and oak trees with an expansive view of the pastoral river valley of El Rito and the majestic Sangre de Cristo mountains. This wonderful, comfortable, and serene hideaway accommodates up to four people. The hand built adobe house with wood ceilings and impressive vigas is spacious and light. There is a large semi-circular sunroom, built like a sunken kiva, that is designed after Casa Grande in Chaco Canyon. There is one bath and two large bedrooms, each with a spectacular view. The softly curved walls of most rooms create a calm and nurturing environment. A fireplace adds to the comfort of the radiant heat. Along with great indoor living and dining spaces, there is a covered patio for outdoor relaxation.

Casa Ambrosia truly deserves its name. In ancient Greek mythology, ambrosia was the special food and drink of the gods and goddesses, thought to confer grace and immortality upon whoever consumed it. Ambrosia is like nectar and was brought to Olympus by doves. In the Homeric tradition, the fragrant ambrosia was thought to be a kind of divine breath of the Earth.

  Casa Ambrosia

(Cont.) Casa Ambrosia borders the mountainous Carson National Forest and you can hike hundreds of miles of nature trails right out your back door. Close to the small town of El Rito, the house is 12 miles north of Abiquiu and 8 miles west of the hot springs at Ojo Caliente. A short drive takes you to a creekside trail leading to Potrero Falls amidst tall ponderosa pines and aspens. Nearby Jeep trails lead you deep into the forest, to high mountain meadows where sheep are still tended by local sheepherders and their dogs for six months at a time, until the winter forces them back down to lower elevations. In winter, snowshoeing and cross country skiing are great pastimes. Year round, the clear pitch black night sky is perfect for stargazing.

The historic village of El Rito has a unique charm. This old Hispanic town presents a terrific library, a traditional adobe church, and old-time stores like Martin's General Store. Opposite Martin's is El Farolito, a small family restaurant world-famous for its authentic northern New Mexico cuisine, and even though it was recommended in the Rand McNally Road Atlas and Gourmet Magazine-an unforgettable dinner costs no more than $8. Their red and green chiles are delicious. While enjoying your stay at the tranquil Casa Ambrosia you may experience this sacred breath of the Earth. And if you stay long enough, you may even dream of goddesses offering you the life-giving and nourishing balm of ambrosia.
